SMART™ is a multi-faceted Air Traffic Control (ATC) high fidelity simulation system dedicated to the training of Air Traffic Controllers at all levels as well as to ATC Research & Development.
The system consists of “traditional” components such as Air Traffic Controller stations (radar and tower), pseudo pilots and instructor station; but this is where all similarities to other existing systems end.
SMART operates within the highly realistic SMART Virtual World Environment (SVWE) that comprises of high fidelity models of surveillance radars and automation system, radar displays, and 3D tower views of airport, aircrafts and pseudo pilots.
Within the SVWE, all SMART components are linked via the SMART-Connect™ network. SMART-Connect allows for easy “Plug and Play” of additional components at all levels, from additional pseudo pilots and radar ATC stations to additional full tower environments. SMART was designed with Air Traffic Control R&D and ATC training in mind and is highly realistic as well as rapidly configurable for hardware and operational scenarios.
The SMART architecture, access to aeronautical databases and its highly interactive and intuitive front end interface allow the operator to develop realistic and accurate site specific operational scenarios. These scenarios include the accurate locations of runways, taxiways and navigation aids and even specific fleet mix of aircraft types and call signs operating at the selected location.SVWE and SMART-Connect provide two critical functionalities to any Customer: the ability to easily expand and optimize the configuration of the system based upon changing needs; and the ability to communicate with other systems, such as flight simulators using common industry standard communication protocols.
The accuracy of the system is the direct result of the high fidelity models interacting with each other within the highly realistic SMART Virtual World Environment (SVWE) and also because SMART is WGS-84 coordinate system based. WGS-84 is the same coordinates system used by GPS satellites and compatible with the most commonly used Aeronautical databases as well as satellite imagery and Digital Terrain Elevation Data (DTED – refer to footer of this publication).
The highly interactive and intuitive SMART developer-user interface allows the operator to generate new scenarios or change existing ones with relative ease.
